Fall(ing) 'til Break: Messiah '08

I guess I'll start this after that dance party I threw a couple weeks back. I ended up sleeping in ridiculously late and staying up late and going to the diner Saturday, but Sunday morning I got up and went to Christian Life Assembly with Erin, Liz, and Naomi and had a cafe mocha with whipped cream (on the house since I'm a Messiah student!). Good message about how we only have limited time on this earth. Interesting thought I hadn't previously heard-that how old you are has nothing to do with your age, but with when you're going to die, so a ten year old who will die at fifteen is old, but a fifty year old who will live til one hundred is fairly young. That Tuesday I finally got my books from Amazon-still mad about that and I still don't have all my books, but whatever... B-sides on Wednesday was a screamo band called Our Last Night, who were taking a break from their tour with Finch (they sound very similar, except Our Last Night's frontman is 15) and were on the Warped Tour compilation. We actually got a mosh pit started (we being me, Jared, Curtis, and a couple others) that was pretty fun despite some kids that had no idea how to hxc dance and the serious kids who just kept making fun of them instead of dancing themselves... but whaddaya gonna do, right? Thursday I had to go to a lecture from Beverly Daniel Tatum on racism in education instead of salsa. It was interesting, and I agreed with her about most things, other than her extreme views on standardized testing. Watched the Office premiere after that. Kim Phipps got really angry when almost all the Messiah kids left immediately after the speech instead of staying for an award presentation and Q&A time... it was sad.

That wknd I went to Lost Films (the on-campus movie series for $1) and saw Indiana Jones, which I liked. I also bootlegged Tropic Thunder on watch-movies.net, which was really weird. I feel as if the people making it were playing a joke on everyone else for their own benefit rather than making an actual comedy. I thought it was funny, but nobody else really did. It was family weekend, so my family came up, brought some stuff I had left home, and saw my room (which ironically has since been re-arranged). We were gonna see Wall-E on campus, but it was sold out, so we went out to get Chinese and then were gonna see the new Christian movie Fireproof (which is doing rather well apparently) but we got lost and ended up late to the theater and saw Lakeview Terrace instead, which I liked, but my mom hated because of language and a bachelor party scene. It deals well with issues of race and provides some great suspense, though. That night my parents dropped me off at 8th & Market in Philly to meet Shirley and Amanda to go clubbing. They ended up being late for various reasons and I had to pee really bad. The only bathroom nearby was in the Burger King on ground level which required you to be a paying customer and buzzed you in and out of the bathroom, so I had to buy a cup of coffee (which was surprisingly good). The DJ sucked at the club since it was a Q102 live broadcast, but it was still fun. I slept over Shirley's house, then Pat picked me up and gave me a ride to Immanuel for church, which was having Pastor Vince's surprise 15th anniversary as pastor celebration. There was an awesome cake with him as shepherd and the congregation as sheep and I ate my dad =D. Got to go to Psalm 150 night (the monthly church share time ad talent show) and then catch a train back to H-burg, where Chris picked me up and got me back to campus in time for my radio show (Sundays 8-10 on 90.7 WVMM locally or online here).

I tried out for a solo in gospel choir on Monday (for Tye Tribbet's Son of Man) which I just found out I got to split with this kid Cody (I do the high part and he gets the low). Tuesday I went to Issachar's Loft for Who's Zoomin' Who? which is a weekly discussion group about Christian perspectives on current events to hear Jeff Rioux-head of SAB-discuss pop culture. Wednesday was b-sides with Brooke Waggoner, whose talent I recognized but I wasn't really feeling. This past weekend was the Art Music Justice tour with Sara Groves, Brandon Heath, Charlie Peacock, Derek Webb and his wife Sandra McCracken sponsoring International Justice Mission and Food for the Hungry, which are organizations fighting slavery, prostitution, and world hunger. It was the best Christian concert/presentation I've been to. They played songs separately and together-including their own music, hymns, worship songs, and covers-showed videos, and generally were awesome. Check out Relevant Magazine's review. Sunday I went to a Hindu temple for my Asian Philosophy class, which was interestingly similar to Greek Orthodox church (in the use of other languages and the waving of incense, etc.). I've learned a lot about Hinduism in that class, especially since we also had a Hindu speaker come to class and watched the incredibly depressing movie Water. Yesterday (Monday) I missed half of gospel choir because I was at a philosphy department party at Dr. Schoettle's awesome house (a renovated warehouse) in Harrisburg. Tomorrow starts fall break, so I guess this is a good time to throw this blog out. My article in the newspaper (The Swinging Bridge) got published today, with a few edits they didn't feel the need to mention, but that's okay. Speaking of articles, I saw this one on BBC about possible changes in online music royalties and iTunes that I found interesting. Guess that's it, so peace and love kids!
